hdparm is a great tool to give yourself an idea of what sort of performance you can expect from your disks and
get a little more info about them.
The most common thing to do is to test the performance/ throughput.
You can do this by using the hdparm commend with -Tt
-T = perform cache read timings
-t = perform device read timings
And the result of running 'hdparm -Tt' is:
# hdparm -Tt /dev/sda
/dev/md2:
Timing cached reads: 22372 MB in 1.99 seconds = 11250.15 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 146 MB in 3.00 seconds = 48.61 MB/sec
To get more information about a disk you can use hdparm -i or -I
-i = display drive identification
-I = detailed/current information directly from drive
