Magento is an open source based ecommerce web application. The Magento Community Edition is the only free
version of Magento available. All other versions of Magento are not free. Here is further information between
the Enterprise and Community versions. Magento some some quite stringent server requirements, you can check
that your hosting account provides all these by running the Magento compatibility check. If you have any

Magento is very easy to install on your hosting account by following these instructions:
1. Download a copy of the full release of the Community (free) version of Magento and extract the files.
2. Upload the extracted files to the server under the domain folder via FTP.
3. If you are using Linux, turning on FastCGI is advised as this will change the user that the site is run
as. This means that you should not need to change file permissions to 777 which can be a security risk. To do
this click on your domain name in your control panel, then click the ‘Edit’ icon next to ‘Web Service’. Next
set ‘PHP’ to be Off and then turn On ‘PHP Advanced’. Then click ‘Add’ in the PHP mode and select PHP 5
FastCGI. When done the settings should look like this:
4. Setup a database for Magento. Select on ‘Databases’ > ‘MySQL’ > ‘MySQL DB Wizard’ from the side menu. If
the MySql is set to ‘Off’ you will need to turn it ‘On’. Enter a name for your database and a desciption and
click ‘next’. Then create a database user with a password and give it a ‘dba’ role, click ‘Add user’ and then
‘Finish’. These details will be needed for the next step.
5. Browse to the your own domain name to start the Magento installation. Go through configuring items such
as your location and currency as required. When you get to the section for setting the database use the
details from the previous step (4).
6. The Magento admin will be available at: http://yourdomain.com/admin
