So you just got your new VPS server from hosting provider x, you selected centos 5 when you ordered and now
you have your details and have logged in to your server you think..... hang on a minute?
CentOS 5? so is it 5.0 5.1 5.2 5.3 5.4 5.5 5.6 or 5.7 ?
There is a simple way to find out, from command line (cli) simply by logging in via ssh or serial console or
even in the command shell in webmin if you are more happy using that.
What ever way you choose log in and get yourself ready and just run:
[youruser@server]# cat /etc/redhat-release
On CentOS you will see something like this:
CentOS release 5.6 (Final)
It may be different on other redhat based distros but will always give you your version number.
And that is it, now you know how to find out your version number on a redhat based OS in command line (cli)
