VPS Hosting

Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting

The term Virtual Private server, or in other words, VPS, is used to mention a virtual machine. This is based on the concept that, both the hosting virtual machine and the client's virtual machine(s) are running on the same computer, with the same hardware. Though they share the same hardware, these virtual machines are nearly equivalent to different physical machines with different hardware. This is what makes VPS hosting unique, as each of these virtual machines are made in such a way that they cater to that particular client's needs and also gives the illusion of privacy for each user.

On the other hand, Virtual Dedicated Server, or in other words, VDS, is used to refer to the fact that the servers do not use any shared/burst ram. Because of this technique, one can save a lot in power and hardware requirements. Also, these servers have the provision to run both the older and newer operating systems on the same machines. This way, there is no conflict in using different applications that run on different platforms. Every server on the hosting can have its own operating system and it can also be switched on and off independent of the other machines.

Though multiple servers being used virtually on a single server has been done for a long time, this practice has been emphasized with the advent of Virtual Private Server or VPS hosting. The working of a VPS hosting is as follows. The physical server, or the hardware, is the one that actually executes all the commands and requests. The different virtual servers on the machine take up the requests from their respective clients and send them to the physical server. These servers are also called as guest servers. The physical server in turn allocates memory for the virtual servers and executes the requests and sends back the answer. The machine is designed in such a way that a particular virtual server can only see the memory corresponding to its request. This provides privacy and security for the other virtual servers in the machine.

There are different types of virtual servers. The virtualized environment will be in such a way that a virtual or guest server will have no idea about the physical or hypervisor server. But, in a paravirtualized environment, the guest server will know what is being done and it is directly connected with the host. Also, one can create an environment that is a hybrid of the two servers.

The first use of a VPS hosting is its cost. It is much cheaper than the shared web hosting and dedicated hosting services. As it is a hybrid of the two hosting, it provides the benefits of both hosting at a lesser cost. Also, customers can access their machines independently, and this allows for security as well as privacy. Though one might find difficulty in running certain software in their virtual environment, these restrictions is relatively lesser compared to some other hosting platforms.
