OpenX, previously known as phpAdsNew, is a open-source advertising server control panel. It is used by thousands of companies for the purpose of delivering and managing many advertisement formats,  like text, video, and flash. The open nature of OpenX enables it to be free to install and use for commercial and personal services.

OpenX is possible to install on shared hosting, but will in many cases overuse resources allocated by the host. It also may be difficult for businesses to manage themselves. Thus having a company host OpenX is ideal in many cases.

OpenX is not for those simply looking for text ads to place on their blog, but rather businesses who wish to manage an advertisement inventory with support for click and impression statistics. OpenX will also allow an advertiser to create publisher accounts to give to sponsored websites, who can automatically see relevant ads to place on their website, as well as how well an advertisement is performing in its current location.

Most OpenX hosting companies will likely opt to run server farms (many servers running the software) in order to operate under any load. This is different from running a standalone server in how it is set up.
