Running a hosting business is not cheap. Offering unlimited plans may seem like a good way to get customers fast, especially the ones you
see for 2 dollar a month unlimited. Lets clear up a few myths of why this is not a good idea.
Unlimited Disk Space - Have you ever seen an unlimited disk? There is no such thing, even with a SAN system there are physical limits as
to how much disk space you can place on any specific server.
Unlimited Bandwidth - Another common promise. What it technically means is unmetered which means you do not pay overages.
What happens in reality this host is getting hundreds of sales a day and he's cramming them all on servers, there could be thousands of
websites on a single server because for 2 dollars a month you have to have a thousand users per server to be making any kind of profit and
then it will be very very slim. Imagine all the support requests that 1000 customers could open, someone has to answer them.
The second problem is that for the most part many customers will not use up a lot of resources, but this is a gamble. There are plenty of
people out there that will use up as much resources as they can and demand more. These customers cause the smaller customers to be
relocated off a server many times as high resource customers begin to overcrowd the resources.
Another issue is that look and read entirely your Terms of Service TOS and Acceptable Usage Policy AUP. Once you have read it, you will
understand that Unlimited is actually limited, you may find INODE limits, CPU limits, and any other number of limits that are designed to
force you to use less resources, many times hosts will kick you off without warning and without backups of your data for using too many
resources.
Companies people need to be looking into are those who charge 6 or more dollars and have sane limits, like 5 gigs of drive space and 100gb
of bandwidth. Those are good specs for a small website without a lot of users. Once you get to where you are getting to your limits then
it's time to upgrade to a bigger plan. The unlimited plans will always live in failure and cause you more grief, and as those servers will
have a lot of issues and slowness your search rankings could be impacted as well.
